1. Rite of Brahmana (Brahma):

2. Rite of the Gods (Daiva):

 

In this type of marriage the bridegroom is handed over to a priest who offers a kind of sacrifice during the marriage ceremony. The daughter is then offered to the gods.

 

3. Rite of the Rishis (Arsha):

 

Here, the groom gives a bull and a cow to the brides father and bids her farewell.

 

4. Rite of the Prajapati - (Prajapatya):

This is the simplest of Hindu weddings, where the groom takes the bride away after taking her blessings from her father. “Both of you do your duties” is the message.

 

5. Rite of the Asuras (Demons):

 

Here the groom spends money on the bride and her family. This marriage is a common display of wealth and power.

 

6. Rite of the Gandharva:

 

In the present world this kind of marriage is called a love marriage. It is the coming together of two lovers. The motivation for such marriages is desire.

 

7. Rite of the Rakshasa: 

This is the cruellest kind of marriage. In this the bride is kidnapped and her close ones are either killed or injured.

 

8. Rite of the Pisaka:

In this kind of marriage the man cunningly wins the heart of a girl who is drunk, sleeping, disabled or mentally unbalanced.
